Who We Are
Board of Directors
Lori Earl is the Executive Director of This Star Won't Go Out, a non-profit supporting families with a child living with cancer. In 2011, the Earl Family founded TSWGO in honor of their daughter Esther Grace, who died at age 16, four years after her diagnosis of thyroid cancer.
Lori is an educator at heart, with certification as a middle and high school teacher, and experience as a college instructor. With degrees in Psychology and Intercultural Studies, Lori is passionate about encouraging others to move towards wholeness, live life fully, and make a difference in their world. Asked what is most important to her, Lori is quick to say it’s her family. She and her husband Wayne have two other daughters, and two sons.
Arielle Roberts is a graduate student studying optometry at The New England College of Optometry. Her passion to help make a difference in people's lives has led her on the path to becoming a doctor. In addition to serving on the Board of Directors of This Star Won't Go Out, she also volunteers for The Harry Potter Alliance, a nonprofit organization that uses fans’ love of story to help promote civic engagement and fight injustices in our world. Arielle loves all things nerdy, and in her free time can usually be found simultaneously watching way too many television shows, chatting with friends online, and enjoying a nice cup of tea.
Andrew Slack is the Co-founder and Executive Director of The Harry Potter Alliance, a coalition of fandom leaders and members who feel passionate about the power of story to inspire and affect social change. He is also a Nathan Cummings Foundation Fellow and is spending this year in New York City developing the Imagine Better Network: an unprecedented movement that goes beyond Harry Potter to all fandoms, expounding fantasy not as an escape from our world, but an invitation to change it for the better. Andrew teamed up with Esther in 2010 to win a $250,000 grant from the Chase Community Giving foundation for The HPA.
Emily has a degree in High School Counseling from Suffolk University. She is currently working in the medical field and for Uplift. In addition to working out and volunteering she also loves brand loyalty, coffee, tea, soap operas, books, and her cats.
Hayley is a junior at Miami University of Ohio where she is studying communications and biology. Her passion for brining happiness and smiles to everyone has led her to work in entertainment at Walt Disney World. She is currently a volunteer member of the TSWGO fundraising team. Hayley loves being a nerd, reading teen fiction, Youtube, spending times with her cats, and all things Harry Potter.
Katie is recent graduate with a degree in English from Boston University and currently works in the bookselling industry. She has been volunteering with TSWGO since the fall of 2013 and is now the Family Coordinator. Some of her favorite things are reading contemporary and historical fiction, overloading on TV shows, and traveling to new places.
Michelle is the Founder and Co-Director of Team Awesome, TSWGO's official charity athletic group. Team Awesome grew out of Michelle's love for TSWGO & Nerdfighteria, her need to decrease world-suck, and her insane dream of becoming a distance runner. When she is not working with Team Awesome, Michelle is a music teacher at an elementary school on the south side of Chicago. She and her husband Jon recently moved into their first house, where they live with their two adorable cats. Her ultimate dream is to one day have nerds all over the world walking, running, swimming, biking, pogo-sticking, and hula-hooping with Team Awesome for TSWGO and its awesome mission!
Elli is a freshman at Northeastern University studying American Sign Language: English interpreting. She's a big Harry Potter nerd and goes to conventions as often as she can. Elli is the social media manager for TSWGO, and couldn't be happier volunteering for such an awesome organization!
